The Master's degree programmes in Batterietechnik and Battery Materials and Technology have started in the winter semester 2022/23. Now, we are particularly pleased to congratulate our first graduate on successfully completing his Master's degree in Batterietechnik!
Julian Thomer completed his Master's degree at the University of Bayreuth at the end of October. He wrote his master's thesis at the Chair of Systems Engineering of Electrical Energy Storage (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Philipp Schmidt) on the topic of "Adaptation of a Battery Management System for an Aluminium-Ion based Battery and Setup of a Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbench for Verification". He had previously completed his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University. To mark the end of his studies in Bayreuth, we asked him a few questions about the past two years.
BayBatt: Why did you choose the University of Bayreuth and the Master's programme in Battery Technology?
- Julian Thomer: I came to Bayreuth rather by chance, but I deliberately chose this degree programme because I find batteries interesting and was and am certain that they will play an even greater role in various sectors in the future than they already do today.
What was a highlight of your Master's degree programme?
- Good question, in retrospect I would say the Master's thesis, working on an interesting topic for so long is exhausting on the one hand, but ultimately also great when you end up with something that you have achieved yourself.
What advice would you give to a new student today?
- Pay close attention in the alignment modules and familiarise yourself intensively with the chemistry-focused subjects, especially as an engineer; the topics from the first semester come up again and again and will help you later if you have learned them properly at the beginning.
Which event in Bayreuth should not be missed?
- The pub crawl organised by the Faculty of Engineering, the pub festival in the city and, if there's an interesting band, a concert on the lake stage in Wilhelminenaue.
And where are you going now?
- I haven't decided yet, but it's very likely to be aposition in industry. I have written the first applications and held the interviews already.
We wish Julian all the best for the future and every success in his professional career! We would be delighted to welcome him back to the University of Bayreuth and BayBatt as an alumnus in the future.
