University of Colorado Colorado Springs

BayBatt recently entered into a fruitful international collaboration with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). As part of this collaboration, Tom Rüther (Chair of Electrical Energy Systems, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael A. Danzer) spent three months researching in the group of Prof. Dr. Gregory L. Plett and Prof. Dr. M. Scott Trimboli at the UCCS. This research stay was made possible by a scholarship from the DAAD-Stiftung.

The joint research focused on the characterization of processes in lithium-ion batteries. In particular, the distribution of relaxation times analysis, which is often used to analyze new materials and to better understand aging effects and performance characteristics, was investigated. In particular, the interpretation of the distribution function was critically reviewed.

It was investigated how individual peaks of the distribution function can be interpreted as electrochemical processes. Among other things, the influence of lithium metal counter electrodes and distributed processes was analyzed. The results have now been published in the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. To the full paper "Demystifying the Distribution of Relaxation Times: A Simulation-Based Investigation into the Limits and Possibilities of Interpretation for Lithium-Ion Batteries".

The successful collaboration between BayBatt and the UCCS underscores the importance of such partnerships in research. The results obtained will further strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions.
